Joy outside of work

Updated: Feb 4, 2019

With the day to day stresses it is so important to find a way to relax and get rid of the stress. If you follow me on Instagram you know I am a lover of the outdoors. I thought I would share my adventures with you.

Finding joy outside of work is a must for me. Spending time in nature is the best way to relax for me. Of course I always have a camera with me to record my travels.

Running a business is hard work and then when you add in the family the daily stresses just keep adding up. One thing I have learned over the years is you have to find a way to unwind and get away from the daily stress of life. You have to find to relax. If you don't, there will be family and job burn out. #relax

Several years ago I started taking a day off from work and head off on a hike. I would go alone so there would be no distractions and I could focus on me. I know that may sound a bit selfish, but if I don't take care of myself there is no way I will be able to take care of my business or my family. I picked places that were scenic and I could meander hike as I like to call it. Most of the time I would walk at a slower pace so I could truly enjoy everything nature had to offer. Every once in a while I would power hike and see how fast I could get the hike in. Now, I hike with my husband. I still meander hike most of the time while he power hikes circles around me. We have a system in place to keep up with each other. It works for us and we both get what we need individually. #hike #hikenc #landscapephotography

Where I Like to Hike

I enjoy short hikes and long hikes, the length doesn't really matter to me. When I am looking for a hike to relax I want one that is going to be scenic and really show be the full beauty that nature has to offer. My favorite hikes take me to a waterfall. I am just so fascinated with waterfalls. They are so majestic and powerful while also beautiful and peaceful. Thought I would share a few of the places I have hiked last year.

Linville Falls

This is one of my favorite places to go; it was also featured in the movie "The Last of the Mohicans". It has several different trails to hike that are each different levels of difficulty. By the name you can tell it leads to a waterfall. I have been hiking the trails here for nearly 26 years. It is amazing to see the changes that have occurred. It has the upper cascades that are smallish. The upper cascades aren't very tall; they are made of a few smaller falls that sit side by side. These falls lead to the main attraction. The main falls stand 150 feet tall. The sheer power of the falls is just amazing.

Hanging Rock State Park

This is a place that I have been going to since I was a little girl. There are at least 5 different waterfalls to hike to, 1 cave (has civil war ties), numerous hiking trails (part of the Mountain to the Seas trail) a lake for swimming, fishing and kayaking. One of the trails leads to the Hanging Rock and tower and the view is absolutely gorgeous. The lake is where I learned to swim and tread water as a child. The hike to each of the falls are rather easy and can be done in one day if you get there early enough. The Lower Cascades has a small wade pool that you will catch families there with their children in the summer.

Pilot Mountain

Pilot is another place that I have been going to since I was a child. It is known for the large rocky knob that you can hike and climb. I am not a rock climber, but I have seen many people make the climb to the top. From the observation decks you can also see numerous birds flying around the mountain and the rocky knob.

Stone Mountain State Park

Stone Mountain is justly named. It has a large rock wall that on a clear day you will be able to see folks climbing. It has several hiking trails and their is one that leads to a waterfall. There are also historic buildings onsite as well that you can tour while there.

Blue Ridge Parkway

While there are several trails along the parkway I am adding this for the view as you see along the drive. There are several pullouts along the drive to see the scenic views from the overlooks. Watch your speed on this drive it is strictly enforced. Honestly, you don't want to drive quickly through the parkway, if you do you will miss the gorgeous blue ridge that it is known for. I promise the ridge is really blue!

Even when getting caught in a rain storm you can make the best of life. The rain just adds new adventure to the journey you are on. No matter how you decide to unwind, find a way to get away and relax. Take care of yourself so you can take care of others.
